Garstin began life in London in 1871 by the entrepreneurial Arthur Garstin.


France at the time was the main exporter to Britain of fancy leather goods but with the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War that supply French industry collapsed. Arthur spotted an opportunity and began making fancy leather goods in the french style but with the sound quality and durability of British craftsmanship. He was regarded as a pioneer within the industry to became one of the largest manufacturers in Britain.


1871

1893

Forever the entrepreneur, Arthur Garstin could in fact lay claim to being the 'inventor' of the wristlet. On September 2nd 1893 he registered to the Board of Trade RD217622 a unique wristlet design. These wristlets were probably requested from British Army OfficerS during the Various skirmishes in South Africa proceeding the 2nd Boar War. 

Garstin grew the business to become a major playEr within the leather goods industry. Employing over 200 skilled craftsmen and women making everything from Satchels and Music Bags to Purses and Travel Trunks. In fact the Globetrotter was so popular that he built a factory in Henden, NW London and 30 tied cottages for the workers and named it Leatherville.

Garstin's success continued whilst exhibiting at the 1922, 1929 and 1947 British Industries fairs, described as Manufacturers of Best Quality Luggage in Leather, Fibre, Canvas, etc., for Road, Rail and Air Travel. Also High Class Ladies' Handbags and Fancy Leather Goods.


Today, Garstin 1871 follow on that proud tradition of crafting beautiful yet durable leather goods.

VALUES & TRACEABILITY 

Each and every Garstin 1871 product is handmade in England in small batches by one person. So each bag is quiet literally from our hands to yours. We believe in making goods with soul that are not only timeless but also durable, ready for the modern world

We wholeheartedly subscribe to the own fewer but better things and believe that if you buy well you only need buy once. If you found a Garstin 1871 satchel in a Paris flea market 100 years from now, you would be drawn to it’s style and craftsmanship.

To craft such beautiful goods we choose our suppliers very carefully. Our leather comes from a small family owned tannery in Tuscany, La Perla Azzura. They make the finest vegetable tanned leather suitable for high end leather goods. They have been using traditional techniques since 1967 to tan the hides that are all European sourced. One smell of their leather and you will understand the quality.

The suede we use comes from Charles F Stead, who have been producing the world’s finest suede in Leeds, Yorkshire since 1890.

All of the hardware on Garstin 1871 bags comes from the famous Abbey Foundry who supply the Royal Household and since 1999 have held a Royal Warrant.
